Documenta Participated in Transnational Conference on Learning Cities and Intelligent Territories in Timisoara (Romania)

Getir Timisoara 1Javier Farto, president of Documenta (European Institute of Studies for Training and Development), presented a paper on Intelligent and Responsible Territories, in the framework of a seminar entitled “European Manager of Intelligent and Responsible Territories-A new professional profile for the local sustainable agents”, which took place the 18th December 2012 in the city of Timisoara (Romania), in the Council Hall headquarters of Timis County.

Given the rapid pace of urbanization, cities are taking increasing responsibilities around the formulation of policies and the provision of opportunities for lifelong learning. In this regard, Timisoara has been long committed to the application of the principles of “Learning City”, with a view to its nomination as European Capital of culture in 2020. To face this challenge, it has the support of local and regional institutions such as the University of Vest or the Romanian Institute of adult education (IREA).

Getir Timisoara 2The conference, chaired by Marilen Pirtea, Rector of the Universidad de Vest, and Simona Sava, Director of the Romanian Institute for Adult Education enjoyed a great reception from the public.

During its first part Javier Farto introduced the concept of Intelligent Territories and “learning territories”, as well as its diverse implications in the practice of local development. In his speech he stressed the crucial importance of certain aspects such as the activation and proper management of social capital, corporate social responsibility, democratic governance or social participation, as well as the knowledge management in the territory in implementing the sustainable development model in territories at the local level.

Documenta has accumulated experience regarding these topics, from which in 2010 emerged the idea of the European Development of Innovation project so-called “European Manager of Intelligent and Responsible Territories” (GETIR), seeking to update and improve the knowledge and skills of local development agents and similar careers at the EU level. Several european partners participated in this Project besides Documenta and IREA: Folkuniversitetet Uppsala (Sweden), DIMITRA (Greece), Bulgarian Development Agency (Bulgary), fully experience in the fields of local development and training.

The day continued with the presentation of the GETIR project by the technical team of Documenta, now about to close. The creation of a new professional profile and a multimedia training tool transferable to different territorial contexts and countries have been the main achievements of the main fruits. Later on, Simona Sava addressed the concept of “Learning cities” and strategies and indicators of “territorial intelligence” in the cities applied to the city of Timisoara.

The seminar closed with a fruitful and intense discussion among the attendees, which included representatives of GETIR project partnership as well as members of Vest University, local third Sector entities (Elderly Association in Timis County, Țărănesti Sustainable Agriculture Association) and local authorities from Timis county.
